Meridian

Meridian, my Columbian/Common cross is shedding, and is noticeably thicker in the body. I weighed him this evening, and he has put on a further 50 g in two weeks. It will be interesting to see by how much he grows over the next few months. I thought that he was quite small compared to other snakes in the collection, but it looks as if he is going to make a sudden spurt.

Probing

I established the sex of my two Hogg Island Boas today by way of probing. It was fairly obvious beforehand which was which, but it is as well to be sure as I still have not got round to naming them.

I plan to breed with them possibly in 2014, although the male may be ready in 2013, in which case I may breed him with a Hypo Salmon and hope to produce some Sunset Boas, like Souki. However, I do want to mate them together as the Hogg Island Boa is one of the prettiest of the Boa family.

Shedding Skin

There must be something in the air. 4 of my 6 snakes shed yesterday, the two Hogg Island Boas, the Hogg Sunset and the female Nicaraguan. I had been expecting the Nicaraguan to shed as her eyes had just begun to clear, the usual sign that the shedding process was about to begin, and the Sunset had begun to mist over, so I was expecting her to shed ina week or so. But there was no sign taht the Hogg Islands were about to shed.

All looking good, clear eyes, and clean skin

Monitoring sizes

Meridian has put on 50 g in the last 5 weeks now weighing in at 350g. Comparing his size to Valentine (another BCI male, owned by my son), I would say that he is a little smaller, both in weight and length.

Souki, being a dwarf boa, is quite a bit smaller, currently weighing 250g. They are both born in 2011, although Meridian was born in May and Souki in July.

Tried to weigh the other 4, but could not get them to stay in the weighing tub. I’ll try again later. The Hogg Island Boas are longer, although much slimmer than the Nicaraguan’s.
